| Afrique was founded
by the musical pioneer Super Claude in the early 80'S, and then came Jagga B from
Klassique who contributed a lot to the sound. All the way from England came Crazy
Richie who added a special flavor to Afrique sound, but due to an overwhelming
response from promoters Afrique needed a new recruit and so Super Twitch was added
with a youthful energy. In the 90'S Afrique acquired Super Slick, Steelie Bashment,
Noriega, and the last member to be added to Afrique was Super Flex. Afrique is
known for setting a trend in the dancehall, dealing with how they made dubplates,
how they selected their tunes, and the type of music they played. Afrique set
the trend for a lot of sounds to enter the indusrty. Afrique Sound System has
a few trademarks which are The Dream Team, Americas Most Wanted,
and the Tameko Award winning sound. Afrique hasn't lost a beat in
over 25 years in the business which a lot of icon and fans has called them
the year to year sound. Website: afriquesoundstation.com

AREA
CODE 876
|
Area Code 876 is the new
sound coming out of Jamaica formed by former Rebel T selectors, Michael Mann aka
Too Sweet, Kevin Shaw aka Dj Kevin, Alton Cox aka Fire Blacks, along with selector
Damian Douglas aka Gelding, Dujon Tomlinson aka Dujon. "Things have been just great so far. We kicked off at Asylum (night-club) and we have also played at Margaritaville where the vibes was just off the hook. The people loved the name of the sound and the kind of energy that we bring," he said. The crew has put together a marketing and management team comprised of Taj James, Joseph Barrett and Troy Collins, as they move to make their mark in the very competitive sound system business. "I want to make it clear that the sound is owned by us, i.e., DJ Kevin, Fire Blacks, Gelding and I where we have pooled our resources to make it happen," Too Sweet said. "We don't have anyone behind the scene financing us. It is just a good feeling right now to know that we own our own sound. We have ordered a state-of-the-art sound system, which is presently being built and will hit the road by the end of the year. So all is good." Commenting on the reason behind the name of the sound, Area Code 876, Too Sweet said, "We came up with the name due to the fact that we travel the world playing music and we have seen where people gravitate to anything good coming from Jamaica, especially our music. So we decide that we are going to represent our country in a positive way, thus the name Area Code 876 which is the national telephone are code." |
|
"Well, Area Code 876 is the sound for the new generation where we are catering for the young audience," Too sweet explained. "We play basically mix music where people can dance and enjoy themselves. Right now we are bringing back house music with a hype party flavor. We are also looking at breaking down the uptown/downtown barrier." Too Sweet has paid his dues as a disc jockey, having been around the turntables from the 1980's. "I was the original person in the 80's to introduce one man talk and one mix thing and bringing a vibes where we entertain our audience along with selectors like Sky Juice," he disclosed. Commenting on the move from
Rebel T, he said, "I still love the sound because I started on the sound
from the days when we were carrying just records, as the sound wasn't built yet.
However, life itself is a journey and sometimes you just have to move on and defend
your own. As the Bible says, 'Blessed is the child that has his own'. Nuff love
to Doozer and Chin still." Area Code 876 recently signed a contract with
the new hype clothing line Conscious Corruption, which is based in Miami and operated
by Clyde Harrison and Donavon Lofters. "We will be wearing the designs of
Conscious Corruption wherever we play and I can tell you that eyes have been turning
because the gears are hot," Too Sweet closed. From: Kingston, JA

Baby Ace started DJing & toying with remix ideas in 1987 while still in high school. After graduating he started spinning at the 2 top clubs in his hometown - Mandeville, Jamaica. Within 6 months he was offered a DJ position at one of the newest hotels on the North Coast, which catered directly to the tourists visiting Jamaica. Baby Ace became the resident DJ at the hotel as well as spinning at 3 different clubs on the weekends, and was also a guest DJ at one of the island's newest radio stations. Baby Ace then moved to the US to study E.E.T. at DeVry. Having moved to Atlanta, Georgia, Baby Ace soon was one of the top club DJs in the city. In 10 years there, he was the resident DJ at 3 clubs, (always kept them packed) and also became an alternate weekend guest DJ for WCLK 91.9FM. In 1999 he was awarded the people's choice award for the Best Solo DJ in Atlanta, and in the same year he helped to open a recording studio where he was the recording and mixing engineer. While still holding things down at the Footprints Nightclub, (every Friday & Saturday night for about 5 years straight) he began working part-time at WAEC 860AM as a shift engineer/announcer. He soon became more involved in radio by hosting 2 "Reggae" based radio shows on the AM airwaves. Still in search of his golden opportunity, Baby Ace moved to California, close to the Bay Area where with the help of a friend, he landed a residential DJ spot at the Island Paradise Club. Pursuing other opportunities that were lead by other responsibilities, Baby Ace moved to the LA area in California. While hanging on to his love for broadcasting, and boasting the talent to move people musically, he started his own Internet Radio Station on July 9th 2002 on live365. His Internet Radio Station has rapidly grown to a favorite amongst many, and now boasts that over 15,000 listeners worldwide have "Baby Ace Radio" locked into their Internet Radio presets. Throughout his career, Baby Ace mastered the art of remixing which has always set his musical presentation aside from all other DJs, and his "personal exclusive remixes" have no doubt helped him to become a favorite DJ to hundreds of thousands, and possibly millions of Reggae/Hip Hop lovers all over the world. Baby Ace is no stranger to the Dancehall Reggae scene having played alongside some of the biggest and best in the business. Such as: Stone Love Movement, Bass Odyssey, Bodyguard, Metromedia, Waggy T, Renaissance, Poison Dart, Mellosound, Super Gold, Delta Force & Venus (namely "Cancer" formerly of the Stone Love Movement). He has also played on shows featuring artists like: Shaggy, Rayvon, Brian & Tony Gold, Beres Hammond, Buju Banton, Merciless, Leroy Gibbons, (former) Born Jamericans, & Louie Rankin. Baby Ace has even done studio production with the likes of Horace Andy, Scion Success, Don Yute and Monty Montgomery. |

Playing sound for approximately 19 years has given me a broad perspective on the industry. I started selecting with Disco Injection an Uptown sound of Mannings Hill Road in 1982 and played steadily with them for three years. The freedom Disco Injection afforded me allowed me to develop my own style of playing. From: Brooklyn, NY |

In 1985 while playing at Fountain Night Club in Regal Plaza Squad 51 owners (Ruddy and Cross) approached me about becoming a member of their crew. I was quite proud of the idea that they had heard about me and wanted me to join their crew. Being their youngest selector, I was given the name Baby Wayne. For two of the five years with Squad 51, I continued playing with Disco Injection. Squad 51 and Disco Injection style of playing music was different and as a result, I was exposed to diverse methods of juggling and clashing. Being a member of two Sound Systems was great. I was able to develop skills enabling me to deal with all dancehall situations. To show my progression into the business, my final dance, a clash, before migrating to New York was with Silver Hawk, Heat Wave and Squad 51. In 1989, one year after moving to the U.S., Techniques Disco originated. Being part owner of a Sound System can be a challenge. My partners and I did not always agree on what was best for Techniques. Playing with Techniques became monotonous and I became restless with the same routine. Oftentimes, people see progression from different point of view and this was the type of situation I encountered. The eighties and the
nineties were great for Reggae. International acceptance was happening and
Reggae was finally getting the recognition it deserves.
Being a selector during this period allowed me to play and clash with the
best of the best. In looking back, the only thing I would have changed was
my hesitation about a solo career. Although I have had no real regrets, my
overall approach to the business is to use every situation good or bad as
a learning experience, plan for the future and deal with each day as it
comes. |

Concord Sound
is comprised of four members, all equal partners in the
sound; Junior Murda, Honeygon, Rico and Derrick Studs. The name of the sound is derived from the fastest plane in the world, the Concord. The speed of this aircraft symbolically represents Junior Murda's quick-thinking, swift and ingenious mixing style, setting this sound apart from many sound systems. Rico & Honeygon, the voices of the Sound use their lyrical abilities like twin turbo engines to give Concord it's added vibe. Derrick Studs is the glue that keeps the sound together; he completes this team with his creative and organizational abilities, which are reflected in the Sound's promotion and planning.
Not only is the Concord
fast, but it is a plane that travels worldwide. Like-wise, Concord Sound
has managed to assemble an international crew. Junior Murda, Concord's
founder and selector was born in Kingston Jamaica. Honegon, the
MC hails from England. Derrick Studs, the booking agent and
promotional manager was born in New York City. Rico, Concord's
musical consultant, MC and selector is of Puerto Rican descent.
The diversity of music that Concord plays is no surprise, given the
diverse background of it's members |
|
|
Junior
Murda
officially created Concord in 1989, but most of it's current members had
prior sound experience. Concord started playing at house parties and
small nightclubs in the early years and has developed into the heaviest
and clearest sound system in the Bronx,
New York area. Concord's crew experience, wicked system and
well-composed musical dub plates have made it one of the toughest
juggling sounds coming out the Bronx. Concord
has taken it sound career to the next level through it's promotional CD's which
are the hottest mix CD's on the dancehall scene. This brilliant move has carried
Concord's name worldwide like the plane that the Sound's name mirrors. The overwhelming
success of the promotional CD's and the crew's musical talent has catapulted the
Sound into an arena that they never expected. This success has given them the
opportunity to play with Sounds like Stone Love, Bass Oddesey, Renaissance,
Tony Matterhorn, Adonai, Addies and others. The Sound has entertained partygoers
from Chicago to Florida, Canada, Jamaica, other West Indian Islands and many more. |

DJ Boom got his start in the music business in the summer of 2001, while working in a West Indian music store in Baltimore City. With daily practice, access to the hottest Dancehall music and local networking, the opportunites to work in clubs arose quickly. And by this time, Boom was ready. After a few years of working the Baltimore Bashment scene and finding a niche, Boom linked up with the international touring band, Jah Works, spinning between their sets. With experience in the thriving Bashment scene and his American upbringing, Boom complimented the well-established Jah Works crowd with a versatile and authentic mix and delivery. "Everyone brings their own experience into their music, and I was lucky enough to have had exposure to both Jamaican and American sounds at a young age," says Boom. In the start of 2003, he tried his hand at remixing, which while rough at first, began to take flight after a few months of work. With a genuine love for the music and West Indian culture, Selector Boom continues to promote music to listeners whether through radio, his website or helping artists and other selectors develop their own website. "A good friend and mentor of mine, DJ Smally, told me you have to deal with people as people because you will always be a person, you won't always be a DJ." Boom goes on to say that, "With the amount of people in this business, everyone can get further working together as opposed to warring with each other, and that's how I try to stay". You can tell by his flex, that DJ Boom has taken Smally's advice to heart. You can catch Dj Boom on BigupRadio.com every Wednesday @ 3am, 91m, 3pm & 9pm (Eastern Time) on his show, "Boom Shots". Toni “Hurricane” Hinkson’s journey to become one of Barbados ’ leading female disc jockeys began just eight years ago. In the early days, she played as an announcer on HOTT 95.3 FM but her real entry into the world of live deejay performance came when she was discovered by Peter Coppin of Monstapiece. For several years she was the sole female deejay of the popular sound system and soon became known for her totally hyped, high energy performances. In 2001, she formed the first female sound system in Barbados- Third Dimension Sound sending shock waves throughout the island. Having shared the stage with the who’s who of Caribbean entertainment performing throughout the Caribbean at Lady Marmalade and Wet Fete in St. Lucia and UWI Jamaica. |
|
Within a few weeks, Hurricane landed the early morning shift locking listeners onto her “ Jumpstart” programme with her sexy voice and smooth mixes. She produced “Pon de Circuit” a daily entertainment news programme featuring the latest news in the entertainment industry which has secured her numerous dub plates and interviews with the likes of Fat Jo, Junior Kelly, Morgan Heritage, T.O.K, Chuck Fenda, Assassin and Freddie McGregor. Well aware of her ability to influence her listeners, Hurricane has built a reputation for incorporating her chart topping selections with information about current and sensitive issues such as HIV/AIDS, music piracy and road safety. It therefore came as no surprise when the Barbados Hilton chose her to host their Sunday Back to the Beach limes at the Hilton Beach catering to sporting activities for the entire family. Presently the sole female deejay member of Top Gunners – the Caribbean DJ Fraternity and sole female ambassador for Passoa this Hurricane is clearly not on a path of destruction but rather seems determined to leave a path of positive vibes. DJ Ron Don has successfully converted his hobby/passion into a burgeoning career. Aside from producing quality mixtapes, Ron Don is respected for his performances at bashments and other stellar industry events throughout the year. DJ Ron Don is praised by Dancehall fans for his top notch remixes, which perfectly weave Dancehall lyrics over pulsating Hip Hop and R&B tracks and vice/versa. Many consumers of Ron Don's CDs initially believed that these were remixes of major Dancehall Reggae producers. Hailing from Guyana, DJ Ron Don has an unbreakable grasp of Caribbean music. Also inspired by members of his musical family and sounds like Stone Love (as he describes as the wickedest sound) and Massive B (for taking Dancehall to the airwaves), DJ Ron Don has many dreams of his own. "Before the year is out, I would like to be known as the greatest Dancehall mixtape DJ," declares Ron Don. "I want to go down the same path that DJ Clue went. However, I want to first mastermind the mixtape world and have my own radio show." The underground culture of Dancehall music is thriving. And DJ Ron Don is at the forefront of this amalgamous culture. DJ Ron Don boasts loads of talent. He prides himself with keeping his eyes and ears on the streets and constantly paying close attention to what pleases and moves the people. "I'm a crowd motivator," says DJ Ron Don. "I make people want to dance. When you come to a World Beat party, you know that you are going to get your money's worth." The DJ (selector/sound system) is the root of Caribbean music. For nearly fifty years, DJs have been responsible for the upkeep and popularity of Caribbean music. The selector/sound system (or mobile DJs) made their way into Jamaican culture in the 50's. It was a time when they entertained the townspeople in open areas after a hard days work. These selectors/sound systems boasted the latest R&B music from the shores of the United States, often mixed with their own riddims. They played tunes that kept people's minds off their daily grind, obstacles and disparities. At the end of the day, a DJ was the premiere source of entertainment in Jamaica. The popular art form spread throughout the Caribbean and the world. DJ Ron Don embraces the rich history of the selector and sound system. He carries out the legacy of his musical forefathers through every CD release, remix and performance. Visit http://www.djrondon.com

Foota Hype is one of the most rapid rising selectors in Jamaican dancehall music. In Jamaica where selectors spend several years trying to make their name known to the dancehall audiences, Foota Hype’s exploits have earned him a renowned name plus a tight following in relatively record time. His face pops up on the posters for major stage shows and concerts, and he is known as the selector who plays tracks both here and overseas for the spirited Bounty Killer. Known for bravado and comical expressions on the microphone, Foota is a crowd favourite in the expansive music loving communities across the country. He unofficially started his career as Oneil Thomas while a student at Calabar High. Though he was not active in the business at that time, his father was a selector on the Singer Tone sound system. He therefore had no choice but to see the turntables at work, and to experience the joy that playing tunes for the masses brings. |
|
By the time he was 13, Foota found out he could rhyme, and write, but rather than become a deejay, he chose to pursue selecting.“I can rhyme good and write tune but it was not in me to deejay it back. Mi strength is in debating, but who knows. Maybe mi no see it yet,” he states. His turntable duties started on the Twilight sound system, which back then had the basic set up of two turntables, a mixer, amplifiers, and three boom boxes. Nothing was basic about his experiences though. Foota was schooled on this sound system. He learnt how to interact with his audience, and how to judge crowd reactions to his tunes. He learnt how to play a complete set starting at a slow pace and building things up to feverish excitement. With this experience, he steadily built up his reputation, moving from community to community in Kingston ’s innercities, where dancehall music’s harshest audiences live. With the popularity came offers to join other sound systems, but he never accepted any offers until he moved to Melody One. Melody One is owned by singer Leroy Sibbles, and with the links Sibblies had in the business, it wasn’t long before he was mingling with the likes of several leading deejays, among them, the fiery Bounty Killer. The two had matching interests, and over time eventually became friends.Things slowed down on Melody One over time, and Foota started hunting a suitable system to work on. He approached several with his demos, but none seemed willing to use him because of full rosters. Friends in the business encouraged him to go solo, a risky trend which had ruined other selectors. It was not until the duo Razz and Biggie along with Bounty Killer encouraged him to venture out that he considered it seriously. He launched out after 2001, and has not looked back since then. He plays everywhere now. Some of the shows he has been featured on are Fully Loaded, Direct Connect, Hype Of All Hype in New Jersey , Jamaica Carnival, and the majority of celebrity birthday parties. He was among a select few chosen to play at the Jamaica National Football Team games at the National Stadium, and the commercially visible Jamaica Carnival. He used these events to further his talent into the Jamaican dancehall psyche. When not at work, Foota will be found reasoning with friends or watching movies. He listens to all types of music, and loves to eat chicken and seafood. From: Kingston, JA |
